CFB Wainwright Fire: Deaths and Injuries Confirmed After Incident at Alberta Military Base (What We Know So Far)
Oct 17, 2026Last updated: Oct 17, 2026, 10:35 PM ET (8:35 PM MT). This is a developing story.
Something terrible happened at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta tonight. A "serious incident" on the base started a major fire, and strong winds pushed that fire past the base fence into the surrounding Municipal District of Wainwright.
Canada's Defence Minister, David McGuinty, has now confirmed there are both fatalities and injuries. No numbers have been released, and no cause has been confirmed.
Please keep the soldiers, their families, and the people of Wainwright in your thoughts tonight. Here's everything that's actually been confirmed so far, and what hasn't.

What We Know So Far
- People were killed and injured. "I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base," Defence Minister David McGuinty said at a late-night news conference in Ottawa. He would not give a number, calling it "a very active and delicate situation," and said there will be more "in the coming hours and days." (CBC, CTV, AP)
- The fire left the base. The Municipal District of Wainwright says the fire "crossed the base fence earlier today and is being actively managed." CTV reports it's being managed south of the town of Wainwright, with an active fire still burning south of Township Road 440.
- Medical crews are on scene. Acute Care Alberta says Emergency Health Services is on scene "supporting care and transport." STARS air ambulance sent two helicopters, one from Edmonton and one from Saskatoon. (CTV)
- An emergency co-ordination centre is open. The MD of Wainwright set one up and is asking people not to go to the Wainwright Health Centre unless they have a critical medical need, to keep it clear for patients. (CBC)
- No evacuation order for residents had been issued as of 7:30 PM local time Saturday, according to CTV. That can change fast.
- An advance voting site closed. Elections Alberta shut the Wainwright Communiplex advance poll because of the fire. Voters in that riding can use the Border Inn in Lloydminster or the Vermilion Elks Hall instead. (Elections Alberta)
Timeline (all times ET, local Mountain Time in brackets)

Wind and Fire Conditions
Strong winds are the reason this went from an incident on a base to a fire threatening the area around it. The MD of Wainwright says the fire "spread rapidly due to strong winds."
Environment Canada had wind warnings out Saturday for gusts near 100 km/h (about 60 mph), but those were for southwestern Alberta, not the Wainwright area. No official wind speed for Wainwright itself has been released yet. We also don't have an official size for the fire.
CFB Wainwright is about 200 km (125 miles) southeast of Edmonton, right outside the town of Wainwright (about 6,600 people). It's one of Canada's busiest army training bases. It's home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, where soldiers do basic infantry training.
What's Still Unconfirmed
I want to be careful here, because real families are waiting on news.
- The explosion. MP Dane Lloyd said there was an explosion. Officials have only called it an "incident" and have not confirmed an explosion.
- The cause. No one has said what started this.
- How many people were hurt or killed. The minister confirmed deaths and injuries but gave no numbers. Ignore any specific numbers you see on social media until officials release them.
- Who was affected. No names have been released, and they shouldn't be until families are told.
- How big the fire is and whether any homes or buildings off the base have been damaged.
The RCMP are involved, and DND says it is still working through the details of what happened.
How to Stay Updated
If you're in or near Wainwright:
- Follow the MD of Wainwright and Town of Wainwright social media pages, and Alberta Emergency Alert (alberta.ca/alberta-emergency-alert).
- Stay off the roads near the base and don't drive out to look. Crews need those roads.
- Don't go to the Wainwright Health Centre unless it's a real emergency.
- Keep your phone charged and alerts turned on. If smoke gets into your home, close the windows and turn off any fans or vents that pull in outside air.
- For official military updates, watch the Canadian Armed Forces and National Defence channels.
I'll update this as more is confirmed.
