Greer, South Carolina explosion

A large blast hit an oil recycling / processing facility in Greer, South Carolina. Witnesses reported a huge fireball and thick black smoke rising over the town. Industrial fires like this can threaten nearby neighborhoods and air quality — treat local alerts as live until officials clear the area.

California grid on edge

On ReadyAtlas, multiple California power-grid alerts stacked up: restricted maintenance operations clearing around October 5, with more windows on October 6–8. That usually means operators expect the system to run near capacity and want providers to skip scheduled maintenance while a major heat wave loads the grid.

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) warned tens of thousands of Southern California customers that power could be shut off in the coming days, and urged conservation especially 5–7 p.m. — peak demand when people get home, run AC, cook, and charge EVs and devices. Some programs even offer bill credits for cutting use in that window.

Southern California Edison (SCE) also flagged public safety power shutoffs (PSPS) tied to wildfire risk, with early notices already covering 1,000+ customers and the potential to climb toward 17,000 or more. Peak wind concerns in parts of Southern California (gusts in the 25–45 mph range in some zones) raise the chance that any new ignition spreads fast.

Heat and extreme conditions in areas like San Diego and parts of Los Angeles were flagged through about October 9 — so PSPS and grid strain can linger for days, not just one evening.

Bull Fire evacuations near Reno

North of Verdi, Nevada (outside Reno / Lake Tahoe country), the Bull Fire grew past 1,200 acres, threatened homes, and triggered evacuations. Authorities described it as human-caused. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and partners ran water drops to slow the spread. Local reporting noted it as roughly the sixth fire in the Reno Hills in two months — a cluster that keeps that corridor on high alert even as other western regions slide toward wetter weather.

Dome Fire smoke and air quality

Smoke from the Dome Fire (~6,200 acres, ~40% contained) flared again and pushed plumes toward places like Sacramento and Modesto. Air quality in the Reno area ran moderate with wildfire smoke in the mix; spots like Fremont, California hit unhealthy AQI readings (around 154 in the red). ReadyAtlas now includes air quality and smoke alerts alongside wildfires, weather, earthquakes, space weather, and power-grid alerts.

What to do

If you’re in Southern California, charge batteries, know your generator plan, and expect possible shutoffs during heat and wind. Near Reno / Verdi, keep go-bags ready and watch evacuation maps. For smoke corridors into the Central Valley and Bay Area, check AQI before outdoor plans.
