PG&E Power Shutoffs Hit 88,000 Customers Across 29 California Counties
Oct 14, 2026Mass power shutoffs have begun in California. PG&E says about 88,000 customers across portions of 29 counties are now in a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event — and for many, the lights are already off, with restoration estimated as late as Saturday, October 17 at 2 p.m.
That’s hundreds of thousands of people who could be sitting in the dark for two or three days while red flag fire weather and dry offshore winds rip across the state.

PG&E expands the shutoff to 88,000 customers
PG&E updated its statewide fire-weather forecast and expanded the planned PSPS. The utility said the event now includes roughly 88,000 customers in portions of 29 counties. As conditions evolved, it added about 25,000 customers and removed about 7,300 from the earlier scope.
The dry offshore wind event was forecast to start Wednesday evening, October 14, and last through Saturday morning, October 17. Red flag warnings cover high-risk areas, and PG&E is warning that if a fire starts under these conditions, it can spread fast.
Maps of the event show purple PSPS outage zones across large parts of the service territory — including areas east of San Francisco and inland regions where people are already losing power.
Multi-day blackouts: restoration into October 17
This isn’t a short flicker. Outage notices in the video show power already off with an estimated restoration time of October 17 at 2 p.m. — meaning some households could be without electricity for two to three days.
That hits hard: food in refrigerators and freezers, medical devices, phones, and people stuck without AC or heat while fire weather is still a threat. PG&E’s suggested actions include charging batteries, filling gas tanks (so a car can charge a phone or give you a little AC if needed), and knowing your evacuation routes.
Fire weather, red flags, and dozens of new fires
The shutoffs are tied to a statewide fire weather event. The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings (including for areas like Kern County and other high-risk zones). Critical fire danger is also flagged for parts of the Sierra Nevada into Thursday and Friday.
On ReadyAtlas, you can see how busy California’s fire map has been: a couple dozen new fires in the past 24 hours alone, plus more over the past week. Southern California especially is sliding toward a near year-round fire season, which is why tracking new ignitions matters even in mid-October.
Community resource centers and 2-1-1 support
PG&E says it is opening more than 40 community resource centers where people can charge phones, get Wi-Fi, use air conditioning, and grab snacks. Residents who need extra help are being told to contact 2-1-1 now and prepare for potential outages before their power is cut.
It’s become a familiar (and expensive) playbook: monitor lines, send PSPS notices, stand up resource centers, and shut the power off so equipment doesn’t spark a wildfire in high wind. The long-term fix people keep pointing to — burying lines in the highest-risk corridors — also costs billions, but so does running these multi-day shutoff events year after year.
East Coast grid strain at the same time (PJM)
While California deals with fire-driven shutoffs, the East Coast isn’t quiet either. PJM Interconnection has been under a grid emergency / capacity warning roughly October 13–16, asking for extra generating units and warning that data centers may have to run on backup generators so the rest of the grid stays stable.
Part of the squeeze: on the order of 60,000 megawatts of generation offline for normal fall maintenance — usually fine between summer heat and winter cold — while unseasonably warm weather (think ~80°F in places like Philly) keeps people running ACs. West Coast shutoffs for fire. East Coast warnings about blackouts and kicking big loads onto backup power. Same week.
