PJM Declares Power Grid Emergency in 13 States, Data Centers Could Be Cut Off
Oct 12, 2026The largest power grid operator in the United States just declared an emergency. PJM Interconnection, which keeps the lights on for 13 states plus Washington, D.C., says its power supply is stretched so thin this week that it may have to cut data centers off the grid and force them onto their own backup generators.
The Department of Energy has signed off on an emergency order, and PJM says the emergency is forecast to last at least through the end of Friday, October 16th. Here's what's happening, who's affected, and why it matters for your home.

PJM Declares a Network Emergency
On October 12th, PJM issued a network emergency alert calling for additional generating units and data center backup generators. The day before, PJM asked the Department of Energy for an emergency order under the Federal Power Act so it could call on designated resources and run reserve generating capacity.
I first saw this pop up as a notification on ReadyAtlas, which tracks power grid emergency orders alongside weather and disaster alerts. This one is a big deal.
The 13 States (Plus D.C.) Under the Order
The emergency order covers the PJM footprint, which includes:
- Delaware
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Kentucky
- Maryland
- Michigan
- New Jersey
- North Carolina
- Ohio
- Pennsylvania
- Tennessee
- Virginia
- West Virginia
- The District of Columbia
If you live in any of these places, your power comes through a grid that its own operator says is under strain all week.
Why the Grid Is in Trouble: Only 900 MW of Reserve
According to the request, PJM had already issued a capacity curtailment notice for October 12th through 14th. The reasons it gave are a combination of:
- Higher electricity demand
- Generation outages (power plants offline)
- Planned transmission outages
- Significant export commitments to neighboring grids
The scariest number in the order: PJM's capacity reserve is forecast to be just 900 megawatts on October 14th. PJM can generate somewhere around 110,000 to 120,000 MW, so that cushion is less than 1% of its total capacity. That's almost nothing. If demand pushes past that line, PJM has to start shedding load.
Data Centers Could Be Forced Off the Grid
This is the part that really stands out. In the order, PJM says it wants to use "reserve generating resources at high loads." The language spells out that PJM wants to tap backup generation in data centers, whether auxiliary, standby, directly connected, battery storage, or otherwise, including hyperscale facilities and other large industrial and commercial users.
In plain terms, if the load gets too high, PJM can disconnect data centers from the grid and make them run on their own generators so there's enough power for everyone else.
This is likely a preview of where things are going. As AI and cloud data centers keep growing, more of them may end up with their own on-site power plants, even small nuclear reactors, so they don't have to pull from the same grid your house uses. And based on this order, that kind of disconnect could start happening as early as this week.
Why Voltage Swings Matter for Your Home
Cutting a huge data center off the grid isn't like flipping a light switch. When a massive load suddenly drops off, or suddenly comes back on, it can cause big voltage fluctuations across the network. Those surges work a lot like a lightning strike or a sudden outage and can damage electronics in your home. They can also damage grid equipment, which is another reason PJM is worried.
If you're in a PJM state this week:
- Plug sensitive electronics into surge protectors
- Keep phones, power banks, and flashlights charged
- Have water, food, and medications for a few days
- If you have a generator or solar battery, make sure it's ready to go
Panama Under a State of Emergency After the 7.7 Earthquake
There's another emergency playing out south of us. Panama declared a state of emergency after the massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake and the constant aftershocks that followed. U.S. troops, rescue teams, and disaster relief resources have been sent to help, and crews are still searching collapsed buildings to make sure no one is trapped in the rubble.
On the ReadyAtlas earthquake layer, you can see the 7.7 mainshock surrounded by aftershock after aftershock over the past 7 days. Buildings and bridges keep shaking, which makes living conditions unsafe.
There are also concerns about the Panama Canal. If strong quakes move closer, they could damage the locks that raise and lower ships. Hundreds of ships sit off both coasts waiting their turn, and only a few dozen can get through each day, so a large tsunami in that area could be a disaster. When the first 7.7 hit, tsunami warnings went out along the coasts of Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, and as far as Mexico, and you could see them live on the ReadyAtlas tsunami alerts tab.
